Black-Epstein Advisory Relationship
Edition label: 2026-10
Definition: The wiki’s analytical handle for the ~$158M (per Dechert; Senator Wyden and the Bank of America complaint put it at $170M) financial relationship between Leon Black (founder/CEO of Apollo Global Management)12 and Jeffrey Epstein between 2012 and 20173 — characterized in the Dechert Apollo Investigation report (January 2021)4 as payments for tax and estate-planning advice5, a characterization that has been actively contested in subsequent civil pleadings and congressional inquiries.6
Overview
The Black-Epstein advisory relationship is the wiki’s reference financial relationship for understanding the post-conviction-Epstein ultra-wealthy-client portfolio: payments occurring during 2012–2017,7 after Epstein’s 2007 SDFL non-prosecution agreement,8 before his July 2019 SDNY arrest.9 The $158M figure comes from the Dechert report’s reconstruction.10
Two Layers of Contested Characterization
Layer 1 — Dechert’s “tax advice” framing (2021)
Per Dechert LLP. “Investigation of Epstein/Black Relationship and Any Relationship Between Epstein and Apollo Global Management, Inc.” Memorandum to the Apollo Conflicts Committee, January 22, 2021. Filed as Exhibit 99.1 to Apollo Global Management, Inc., Form 8-K, January 25, 2021, SEC accession no. 0001193125-21-016405., the report finds no evidence of involvement in Epstein’s trafficking enterprise.11 Black announced his planned retirement as Apollo CEO on the day the report was released.12
Layer 2 — Subsequent challenges (2023+)
The Dechert characterization has been challenged by:13
- Jane Doe v. Bank of America, N.A. Class Action Complaint, No. 1:25-cv-08520-JSR (S.D.N.Y. filed October 15, 2025), ECF No. 1. — civil pleading treating the “tax advice” characterization as contested14
- Wyden, Ron. Letter to Pam Bondi, Attorney General; Scott Bessent, Secretary of the Treasury; and Kashyap Patel, Director, Federal Bureau of Investigation. U.S. Senate Committee on Finance, June 16, 2025.
